Food Lion is one of the leading mobile food companies in India.
The company, which makes pet food and snacks, has been serving its customers for over a decade and is currently on a roll in India as well.
In the past, the company has been working with local pet owners to sell pet food at a cheaper price, but its expansion into fast food has helped it expand rapidly.
According to Food Lion founder and CEO Srinivas, the fast food industry has changed drastically since the 90s, when pet food was only available in restaurants.
“In those days, the pet food market was much more robust,” he said.
“A lot of pet food manufacturers were already making pet food in their factories.
But we’ve seen the market shift dramatically in the last 10-15 years.”
For instance, the growth of pet and kibble companies in the fast-food industry helped Food Lion, along with its competitors like Nestle and Alkahest, to expand rapidly in the market.
“Fast food is not just about food.
It’s also about food-delivery, which is something we have been trying to do for a long time,” Srinivas said.
He said that the growth in the pet and pet food markets has been a boon for the company, as they have helped the company to attract a bigger and bigger customer base.
The food industry is becoming a much bigger business in India, and this has helped Food Lions to expand globally.
“In terms of sales, PetLion has grown over 100% over the last three years.
In comparison, Alka-hest has grown only 10% over that time,” he added.
“We’re seeing a lot of growth for us as a company, and the food industry in general.
We’ve been able to grow this business and get better quality pet food.”
Srinivas said that food manufacturers like PetLions growth in India and the growing popularity of pet foods in the US is a great reason to be bullish on food in general, and Fast Food in particular.
“The food industry here in India is much healthier than in the West.
It is much more environmentally friendly, and it has been able now to bring pet food from China to India at very competitive prices,” he noted.
“As for Fast Food, it is a very different market in the United States.
There is very little competition.
People don’t even know how fast food is in America.”
According to Srinavas, the current food industry growth is a good thing for India, as it allows the country to focus on more sustainable industries like agriculture.
“There is a lot more opportunity for the agriculture sector here, and for us, we want to expand our presence here,” he stressed.
“It’s a very good opportunity.”
For those of you wondering why fast food in India costs so much, the answer is quite simple.
In India, there are two main categories of fast food.
According to Sinead Smith, a research fellow at the McKinsey Global Institute, there is an average of 40% markup in the Indian food market.
This includes the price tag of ingredients and the price of raw ingredients.
The markup is often high for pet food, and also for kibble, which costs around 20% to 25% more than the food in the main fast food market in America.
This difference in markup, which also includes price and packaging, has resulted in some of the most expensive fast food brands in the world.
Fast food chains like McDonald’s and Wendy’s, which sell their pet food for around the same price, are also very cheap.
In fact, these chains sell pet and dog food at nearly the same prices, according to Smith.
“You can eat dog food for less than what McDonald’s or Wendy’s sell it for in America,” she added.
However, Srinas said that pet food is only one aspect of the fast casual industry in India where a lot is happening.
“Most of the pet foods sold in India are produced in India,” he explained.
“I would say that pet foods are just one piece of the whole ecosystem here.”
According for example, in the country, there have been more than 2,000 pet food factories across the country.
“These pet food plants are all doing different things like growing pet crops, or selling kibble,” he observed.
“And so they are all different segments of the economy.”
According Smith, the rapid growth in pet and cat food manufacturing in India has given the country a very big opportunity to diversify its food industry.
“India is the biggest market for pet and kitten food in Asia,” she said.
In addition to pet food manufacturing, the country also has a huge pet food sector.
“When you look at the cat food market, India has more than 500 pet food plant,” Smith added.
